Let’s do this!

Hilke Knitting

Hi and welcome πŸ™‚

Welcome to what exactly?

This a website and blog-to-be about how to knit socks! There will be regular blogposts and free written patterns to accompany the knitting video tutorials that I have been making since December 2015.

You are probably new here (since I am new here, too πŸ˜€ ) so I will take this opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Hilke and I am a 27 year old student from Germany. Knitting socks is a bit of a passion of mine (if you haven’t guessed it by now).

One of the things I remember from my childhood is that my mom used to make us wear hand knit socks when we went sledging or ice skating. Btw I still have one of the pairs that she made 10 years ago and they are still perfect! Anyway I have always associated knitting socks with sitting under a blanket with a cup of tea and some candles lit on the table which is what I enjoy most on fall or winter days.

The funniest thing is, that I didn’t even learn how to knit until a couple of years ago. I didn’t learn it at home and I didn’t even learn it at school, which is crazy since in sixth grade I learned how to crochet and even how to build a nesting box! πŸ˜€

I first attempted to learn knitting by reading a book, which was a complete waste of time. I didn’t get what the author was doing and my hands kept clenching. After a while I decided to watch some videos about it instead and completed my first pair of socks. I still own that first pair as well and I still remember the pride I felt when I put them on for the first time πŸ™‚

So that was the start of my knitting journey and ultimately the very first step towards my YouTube channel, which followed many years later.

I am currently looking into dyeing yarn and working with different colors to get different results and so far I am really loving it! But that is a topic for a whole ’nother post.

What am I doing when I am not knitting?

Mostly I am either studying (well… sometimes!) or working part-time at the university. The last one doesn’t really count, since I also knit at work when it’s a slow work day, but don’t tell my boss! πŸ˜€

I am also a big fan of sewing! Baby clothes are my favorite – especially if someone I know is expecting. I sometimes post photos of the things I made on my Instagram account, so if you are also interested in sewing, you might enjoy following me here.

This is it for today! I hope you’ll stay around for regular posts about tips and tricks on how to knit socks!
